The accuracy of watches is influenced by magnetism. The mechanical movement should be demagnetized, either assembled or dismantled, after every service and cleaning. The balance spring, in particular, can become magnetized over time, especially in older movements. Harmonic oscillation of the spring is then no longer possible, and the watch does not run accurately. Tools can also transfer magnetism and should be demagnetized before use with watch movements.
Note: Small pieces can be placed inside a plastic bag and placed in the demagnetizing area. Electronic quartz watches should not be demagnetized.
